About Farragut:

Farragut is a town located in Knox County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 17,720. Farragut is a suburb of nearby Knoxville and is named in honor of American Civil War Admiral David Farragut, who was born nearby in Old Concord (see below) in 1801. Farragut High School, which serves the local area, is known nation wide for excellence in both athletics and academics. The school is routinely ranked as the best in the state, and among the top fifty public high schools in the nation.

Farragut Geography:

Farragut is located at 35°52'39" North, 84°10'25" West (35.877511, -84.173548).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 42.1 km2 (16.2 mi2). 41.7 km2 (16.1 mi2) of it is land and 0.4 km2 (0.2 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.05% water. To a resident, the entire area of western Knox county, including those areas in the county that are not incorporated into Knoxville or Farragut, are usually referred to as "Farragut". Farragut High pulls students from throughout the town and areas outside the city limits.

Farragut Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 17,720 people, 6,333 households, and 5,231 families residing in the town. The population density is 425.2/km2 (1,101.5/mi2). There are 6,628 housing units at an average density of 159.0/km2 (412.0/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 93.88% White, 1.80% African American, 0.15% Native American, 3.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 1.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,333 households out of which 39.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 76.0% are married couples living together, 5.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.4% are non-families. 15.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 32.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $82,726, and the median income for a family is $91,423. Males have a median income of $70,873 versus $34,955 for females. The per capita income for the town is $35,830. 2.9% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.9% of those under the age of 18 and 4.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Farragut History:

Farragut was incorporated on January 16, 1980. The first mayor and aldermen were elected April 1, 1980. Farragut includes much of the area where the Civil War Battle of Campbell's Station was fought on November 16, 1863. "Old Concord" is an area of the town sitting on the old channel of the Tennessee river. Picturesque buildings and antebellum homes sit along the river, as well as several very old churches. Part of the $500 million Turkey Creek shopping, office, and housing development, began in the late 1990s, is within the town's borders.
